How to explain common static electricity effects

Explanation

Rubbing certain insulating materials transfers electrons between them. An object gaining electrons becomes negatively charged; losing electrons makes it positive. Like charges repel and unlike charges attract; charging conserves total charge and does not involve protons moving between the objects. Example: Explain why an insulator can retain charge. Charge cannot move freely through it to Earth. Use the stated conditions to connect the scientific model with the observation. Check your reasoning.
