Explanation

A moment is the turning effect of a force about a pivot. Calculate moment = force × perpendicular distance from the pivot to the force’s line of action. For rotational equilibrium, total clockwise moment equals total anticlockwise moment; choose a pivot and use perpendicular distances. Example: A 30 N load acts 0.2 m from a pivot. Find the force at 0.5 m needed to balance it. Load moment = 30 × 0.2 = 6 N m; balancing force = 6/0.5 = 12 N in the opposing rotational sense. Consider the conditions.
