Conservation of Momentum
To explain conservation of momentum and use it to calculate the motion of objects before and after collisions.

What you will learn

What conservation of momentum means

When total momentum stays constant

How to calculate momentum before a collision

How to calculate momentum after a collision

How to solve simple collision and explosion problems
Explanation
In a closed system with no resultant external force, total momentum before an interaction equals total momentum after it. Use signed velocities and include every interacting object. Momentum is conserved in collisions and explosions; kinetic energy need not be conserved, particularly when objects stick together. Quantitative collision calculations are Separate Physics. Rearrange the relationship before substituting if a different quantity is required. Use clear labels. Identify cause and effect.
